Car Ownership Programs

Car Ownership Programs

Assistance with Car Ownership

Car ownership programs assist people in the purchase of a car when they are unable to do so. There are a variety of organizations that obtain reliable used cars from donations and other means. They will then either sell for a low price or give the car away for free, to program recipients. Contact Us for a complete list in your area.
There are also opportunities to get help with the additional costs associated with car ownership.
  • Match Funds Programs will match the amount you have saved for a new car (i.e. You save $500, the group will match some or all of that $500.)
  • Successful Car Ownership provides assistance for car repairs and insurance costs
  • Low Rate Auto Loans
Please complete the contact us form so we can help you.

Repair Assistance

Numerous churches, ministries, and other non-profit organizations may be able to provide minor car repairs free of charge to the needy and those with low incomes. Most of the repairs are targeted to people who need a car for transportation to work or a medical appointment. Examples of such organizations are:
  • The Compassionate Ministries of the Church of the Nazarene
  • Working Cars for Working Families
  • The Car Ministry Program
  • Domestic Violence Transportation Program
  • A Helping Hand Ministry
  • Auto Repair Good Guys Foundation
  • The CARpenter’s Garage
  • Your local community action agency
To receive a detailed list of organizations providing car repairs or assistance in your state, please fill out the form on the Contact Us page.

Free Gasoline Programs

The grants for free gasoline are awarded monthly by Free Gas USA. Fuel cards will be distributed based upon the donations received, the location(s) of participating gasoline distributors, and also the geographical restrictions of funds processed.
  • Grants for free gasoline are provided in amounts that range from $50 up to $1200 dollars.
  • There grants are restricted to fuel purchases only, and grants are provided on an as needed basis.
  • Recipients of the grants are assigned coded fuel cards thus limiting their purchases to a certain dollar amount, and it also ensures the money is spent on fuel purchases.
  • The gasoline purchases from the program are permitted to provide people with the means to fulfill basic necessities such as employment, medical, grocery shopping and educational transportation.
How to apply for free gasoline grants:
The gasoline grant applications are not distributed via United States mail. If you are interested in the program, applicants must obtain an application via theirwebsite. All applications to the program need to be submitted with an agency referral form or they will not be processed and will be denied.

Housing Support

Housing Support

Real Estate Grants

On May 29, 2009, the face of home buying in the United States changed dramatically. It was on that date that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a statement saying that there would be an $8,000 credit from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for first time home buyers to be used toward the purchase of a home insured by the Federal Housing Administration.
Assistance includes but is not limited to:
  • Short-term loan for the $8,000 and, upon receiving the tax credit; you could pay back the loan.
  • Home improvement grants for senior citizens
  • Direct assistance for home improvements from  Spread The Purple
Please fill out the contact form so we can help you.

Rental Assistance

One of the more critical problems facing households today is their ability to pay their rent on time. As the unemployment rate in the United States hovers around 10%, many households are having great difficulty paying their rent. While public assistance and unemployment benefits help, there is still a tremendous need for assistance for thousands of families.
Spread The Purple will help you apply and navigate the paperwork for these types of programs
  • There are both federal and statewide programs designed to assist those families on a temporary basis in meeting their rental payments
  • Joint program through various non-profits that gives direct aid for rental subsidies
  • Direct assistance from Spread The Purple
Contact us here to find out how you can qualify.

Home Repair Assistance

Unable to keep up with necessary repairs on your New Jersey home? We can help you locate and apply for grants that can assist you in making repairs to your home. When the health and safety of a home’s occupants is in jeopardy there are ways to get help.

Get Energy Assistance through LIHEAP

As the winter days get colder, it’s tempting to bump thermostats higher. Of course, walking into a toasty, warm home is nice, but the associated costs are not so nice. Too often, homeowners find themselves in a tough financial situation as a result of high energy bills during the coldest part of the year.

Fortunately, homeowners in New Jersey – particularly those in lower income brackets – can find financial aid through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. As noted by NJ211.org, LIHEAP is a home energy assistance program that is federally funded and “designed to help low-income families and individuals meet home heating and medically necessary cooling costs.” The assistance provided through this program is offered to applicants on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Applicants can qualify for LIHEAP benefits if they are responsible for heating and cooling their home (by paying a utility company or landlord) and have a gross income that is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Those living in public housing are only eligible for LIHEAP assistance if they pay for their heating and cooling costs directly to the fuel supplier. The amount of assistance is determined by income, household size, fuel type, and heating region.
The application period for LIHEAP assistance runs through April 30. The application process is handled by the local application agency in your area. New applicants must provide copies of certain documentation when submitting their application, including proof of income for every member of the household age 18 or older; a verified copy of the applicant’s social security card, letter from the Social Security Administration, or social service agency; a copy of the most recent utility bill; and proof of residency.
If you are in need of energy assistance and feel you may be eligible for LIHEAP assistance, visit NJ211.org for a complete list of application requirements. Also, don’t forget that Spread the Purple is here to help, too. Visit our website or contact us so we can help you apply for the energy assistance you need.

How to Schedule Savings Throughout the Year

It’s no secret that December and January can easily become the most expensive months of the year. Between various holiday get-togethers and celebrations, there’s a seemingly endless list of food and gifts to buy.
Add on travel expenses for those of us who have long-distance family or friends we want to visit, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the dollar signs. We have previously written about spending strategies to help you curb some of these holiday related costs, and today we’re excited to bring you more information on how to save in the coming days and throughout the year.
You've no doubt noticed that stores have begun bombarding potential customers with advertisements for super savings and great deals. Butlike we’ve talked about before, not every “deal” is created equal. Fortunately, several products are consistently cheaper during certain months of the year, and that means- with a little bit of planning- you can save bundles. You can read a comprehensive list of how to get the biggest bang for your buck during each of the month of the year here. In the meantime, we've compiled some of the biggest savings you should watch out for in the coming months.
    December
Thanksgiving is over, so forget turkey. Holiday ham is where the savings are this month.  Throw in some warm, buttery dinner rolls and mixed nut and dried fruit hors d’ouevres for a frugal and fabulous dinner party. It’s the holidays, so you can’t skip dessert. If you’re not much of a baker stick with frozen pies and refrigerated cookie dough for the best savings. For all you chefs, baking supplies (e.g., flour, sugar, baker’s chocolate, yeast, sweetened and condensed milk, cooking oil) are also a great value, so feel free to create your own masterpiece without going over budget. According to About.com, December is also a great time to buy winter coats, aluminum foil, gift cards, and carpeting and flooring. One last December super saver that we can’t resist sharing with you: motorcycles. Why? Well, your guess is as good as ours.
    January
December doesn't get all the glory. Chocolate lovers should put a star on January’s calendar page. Be on the lookout for clearance prices on Christmas and Hanukkah sweets. If you overdo it, don’t worry: diet foods and exercise equipment are also a good deal this month.  Other places to look for great value are toys, linens, winter clothes, electronics, air conditioners, sneakers, and holiday decorations.

Help the Vicitms of Sandy on Their Road to Recovery

More than seven weeks have passed since +Hurricane Sandy hit shore and, with its arrival, wreaked havoc on the northeast. Within days of the +devastation, numerous charities, organizations, and caring individuals began to mobilize +fundraising efforts to help the victims. Over $92 million has been raised and people have been able to begin the process of rebuilding their lives. However, there is much work still to be done. There have been estimates that total recovery from Sandy could cost as much as $50 billion dollars, making it the second most expensive storm recovery initiative in US history.

In an effort to help meet the needs of thousands of families and businesses, Spread the Purple has launched a +fundraising initiative, The Road to +Recovery. Our goal is to raise $700,000 over the course of the next year to help families reclaim their normal lives. Because the road to recovery is a long one, we hope to keep the plight of Sandy’s victims in the public eye throughout the coming months. One way we hope to accomplish this is through you.  Once you make a donation to the Road to Recovery fund, you’ll have the opportunity to help us fundraise by creating your own +Facebook page highlighting this cause.
Not ready or able to donate money at this point? No problem – We still can use your help! Click on the “Support Us” link on our page to show your support to your Facebook network. If you really want to make an impact, you’ll have the chance to invite five friends to join the cause with you.  If you’re a more private person, don’t worry. You can skip the invitation step.
Whether you have $20, $200, or just a passionate sense of caring for your neighbors, we need you to help us spread the word! Donate and support our Road to Recovery fund. And, if you know anyone who has been affected by +Sandy, you can also send them directly to the Spread the Purple website.

Free Gas USA Can Help You Put Gasoline in Your Car

Over the past several years, we’ve watched the cost of living inch higher and higher. Even our most basic needs seem to cost a +fortune. For those who were already dealing with +financial +hardships, these increasing costs can be a source of +stress and frustration.
Many people have taken what they can into their own hands and are working hard to discover new ways to save money anywhere possible.
+Couponing, for example, has become a popular way to save at the +grocery store. However, one area where people can’t seem to find relief is filling up cars with gasoline.
Fortunately, there are organizations that provide assistance for those experiencing hard times financially. One example is +Free Gas USA Inc. As a +nonprofit +gasoline grant provider, Free Gas USA Inc. assists citizens of the United States who are in need of gasoline to fuel their vehicles in order to drive to work, doctor’s appointments, school, and other important places.
+Free Gas +USA Inc. awards grants on a monthly basis to pre-qualified candidates through coded fuel cards. The grants range in size from $50 to $1,200 and eligibility is based on income, need, circumstance, and grant funding availability. +Grant applications are accepted between +January 1 and +December 31 of each calendar year.
If you are in need of assistance in purchasing gasoline and would like to apply for a grant from Free Gas USA Inc., it is important to note that you cannot receive gasoline grants via U.S. mail. You must apply for the grant on the Free Gas USA Inc. official website. Applicants must also include a referral letter from a human service agency or church to verify income, vehicle ownership, and proof of insurance. Applications submitted without this information won’t be processed and will, therefore, be denied.

The Cost Saving Advantages of Online Shopping

Everyone knows trying save for their family can become hectic. You’ll be happy to know that, whether you’re shopping for gifts or just everyday items, +purchasing online can save you valuable time and hassle.  The good news doesn't stop there: online shopping can even save you money. How? Many web-based companies are able to provide excellent online values because they don’t have to pay the, overhead that comes with owning and running a physical business.

That means they save expenses on employee pay, taxes, and more. They can then pass those savings on to you, the consumer. You can actually up the cost-savings of online shopping when you combine these great online values with special promotional coupons and other consumer incentives.
You may be wondering about shipping costs, but there are often ways to avoid that expense altogether. Several online stores that have physical locations offer consumers the option of shipping their purchases to the store location nearest them.  Even if you’re buying from an online-only company, make sure to check and see if they have any current promotional codes that could lower or even eliminate the shipping costsThis way you would only be paying for the price of the item without the headache of paying the additional charges for shipping and handling before taxes are applied.
If you still aren’t convinced that online shopping saves time and money, we have some more advantages to point out. You can shop online literally any time. Day or night, rain or shine, these vendors are open and ready to process your order. Think about it: you could finish your shopping while cooking dinner or watching a movie with your family! Shopping from home also saves a car trip, which means saving on gas or a public transit trip. Online stores offer the opportunity for researching the best deals. In less than five minutes you can compare prices across several companies and find the best price for the products you want. If you have a specific product in mind, Google has a handy feature that lets you compare vendors at a glance.
If none of these advantages have convinced you to try shopping online, there’s one last tip you should consider. You can find almost any item while enjoying competitive prices and saving time without ever taking off your pajamas. That’s one guaranteed way to make the holidays a little less stressful.
Stay tuned to Spread the Purple for more information, as we will be sharing  tips to help you save money throughout the holidays and all year long!

Food Banks See Rise in Middle Class Clients

You have no doubt heard that more and more individuals and families are turning to government and community resources for support as we continue the slow economic recovery. It may surprise you to learn that food banks are reporting serving a whole new demographic: the college educated middle and working class family.
This is a national trend being seen across the country, and New Jersey is no exception. The Atlanticville highlighted the problem in December 2012, and we've summarized what they found below.
    Who Needs Help
While the term “Food Bank” likely brings to mind images of poverty stricken individuals long out of work, Food Bank managers report that several of their clients are currently working; some of them even have two members of the family in jobs. What volunteers hear is that, after bills and gas costs, even working families still don’t have enough money left over for food. This is new for these veteran workers who have served the hungry for years.
The numbers are sobering. The Christians United for People (CUP) Food Pantry reports that their clients have increased from 40 to 217 in just three years. That’s more than a 400% increase. As The Altanticville article points out, these numbers only represent the individuals who actually go to the pantry and collect the food. Most of them have uncounted spouses and family members back home who also rely on the food they pick up. The New Jersey Federation of Food Banks also reports an increase of nearly 50% over the last four years in the amount of demand in the state for food assistance.
    What Can You Do
The general rule is that during hard economic times, food banks see an increase in demand for food along with a decrease in donations. This makes sense; more families are trying to subside on less. This fact makes it all the more amazing that New Jersey is actually bucking this trend. Volunteers and administrators report that they have seen their food and money donations increase.
Not only are New Jersey residents giving more material goods, they are also donating more of their time. The Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts have worked several hours over the past few years collecting food and stocking the shelves. Then there are the larger corporations that chip in. +ShopRite, +Wegmans, +Target, and +Panera Bread have all worked with food pantries to help feed those in need.

Learn How Spread The Purple Addresses the Home Heating Oil Delimma

New Jersey financial aid organization, Spread the Purple, a community support system for working class families, is celebrating their recent Home Heating Oil Scholarship. This scholarship program was developed as a way to combat the raising heating oil prices hitting a record level high this year, even as natural gas prices plunge. As of mid last year, President Obama has proposed sharply cutting the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program among all nonprofits. The average state benefit last year was about $800 for the season; now it may be closer to $300. Eligibility requirements have tightened too, and with oil prices climbing. Unfortunately, the need is increasing but the funding is no longer available to homeowners.
Spread The Purple would be honored to gain support from any runners and specters for this run. So, come on out and "Run For Warmth," while given back to the community! The newly added project called Home Heating Oil, which the organization is excited about raising funds for New Jersey’s homeowners at their “Run for Warmth” 5k Run Fundraiser. The event is taking place during +Labor Day Weekend on Monday, September 2nd, at 10:00 am on 1030 River Road, Grove 4, +Piscataway, NJ 08854, +Johnson Park. Participants are still encouraged to register at https://www.signmeup.com/site/reg/register.aspx?fid=562VCJ7, and can do so for $20 before the event or $30 on the day of the event.
    5K Run For Warmth Fundraiser

Maryange Ariste, Founder of Spread The Purple, revealed, "It was wonderful to spread the word about our new organization. We feel that we are pioneering new ways to run nonprofits and create solutions in today's economy. We are grateful to the following supporters of our 5K Run: +Road Runner Sports, +Mc Lonnie Running Store, +Princeton Running Company, +ShopRite Supermarket, and +Mosaic Salon and Day Spa for helping us get the word out about what actually causes financial difficulties, in regards to home heating oil, in the lives of our clients, as opposed to outdated clichés about how people lose money. We are working to be the most effective nonprofit ally for the working class."
Spread the Purple organized fundraising efforts and provides services to help working class families meet ends met. The organization has been helping people find financial grants and aid since 2006.

Holiday Savings Tips at the Grocery Store

Holiday gatherings are often centered around food, and when planning for a family dinner or another gathering, it can be easy to let your spending get a little out of control when purchasing everything you’ll need to prepare lots of delicious dishes for your festivities… not to mention all the other items you’ll want to have on hand when your holiday guests arrive.
It is important to think of ways you can save money at the grocery store, as you’ll be purchasing more during the holidays than you would on a normal grocery shopping trip. Below are a few suggestions we recommend to help keep your spending in check the next time you head to the grocery store.
Buy One Get One (BOGO) Deals: There are many great BOGO deals at grocery stores, but there are also some offers that can be rather deceptive. Before you head out for a BOGO offer, look into it carefully. For example, many +grocers offer BOGO specials on meats. These meats are typically displayed in a separate case from the other meats. Visit the meat department and compare the prices per pound of BOGO meats and the meats in the meat department.
Also, look at expiration dates on BOGO items. Sometimes, BOGO items at +grocery stores are nearing their expiration date. Make sure you have time to use the items before they go bad. If you don’t, then it’s a deal you should skip.
Sizing It Up: When you see sale items in your weekly grocery store flyer, read the fine print to see if the sale items are for a certain size. Many times, sale items will be for the smallest containers of the product. Compare prices per unit before you buy – the larger containers that aren’t on sale might be the better deal.
10 for $10: Many store offer 10 for $10 +specials, which can be handy when you want to get a good deal on items you use regularly. However, compare the +prices of the same items at other stores, as you may be able to find them for less than a dollar at another store.
Two-For: +Deals offering two products of a certain brand for a certain price can also be deceptive. For example, you see a brand of aspirin marked two for $4, with the regular price $3. Check the specifics of the +promotion before you buy it. If you only want to buy one bottle, will you be charged $2 or $3? Will you be buying and spending more than you need in order to get the deal? Are there other brands you can purchase for less? Do your homework and see if the two-for deal is as good as it looks.
For more suggestions to help you with cost savings at the grocery store this holiday season (and all year long), be sure to subscribe to Spread the Purple to receive our regular updates.

Looking for a Run During Labor Day Weekend?

+Running or +walking +3.1 miles and running or walking 3.1 miles for a cause are two very different things. There’s something about the positive +energy and compassion that abounds at a charity race that give you an extra boost when trying to reach the finish line.
Well, now is your chance to feel that special running power. It’s time to register for Spread the Purple’s 5K Run, Run for Warmth.
Heating oil prices could very well hit record highs this year, and the president has proposed drastic cuts to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Additionally, state heating oil benefits have decreased considerably in the past year, with eligibility requirements becoming even harder.
As Spread the Purple strives to help others by providing assistance or information on assistance programs, we have decided to take action by hitting the pavement. We hope you’ll lace up your sneakers and join us for our 5K Run, "Run for Warmth," on Monday, September 2, 2013. The run will take place at +Johnson Park, 1030 River Road, Piscataway, NJ at 10 a.m. Preregistration

will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The entry fee is $20 for those who register before race day, and race day registration is $30. +Food, +refreshments and many more fun +incentives will be on hand. The course was certified through the +USATF and the race will be timed through a company called +Fast Finishes.

If you can’t make the event but still want to help out, you can visit our +racer +registration website, +SignMeUp.com, to make a +donation. Feel free to contact us with questions at 973-280-3091 or by email at mariste@spreadthepurple.org.
We look forward to seeing you on September 2nd as we +run, +jog, and +walk to raise +funds for qualified +homeowners in need of +financial assistance for +heating their homes.
Are you interested in learning of other ways to help people in need in our community? Visit our website to learn about +volunteer opportunities available through Spread the Purple. Together, we can make a positive impact in our +community, improving the quality of life for those in need!
